My Two Cents on... Picking a Photographer

October 15, 2013  •  1 Comment

Choosing a photographer is a hard job, because we are all so different.  We have different styles.  We have different strengths and weaknesses.  We have different business processes and preferences.  We are at different stages in our careers.  Some of us are artists while others of us are craftsmen.  We are different people with different personalities.

So... how do you choose?

1) You pick what fits best with YOU.  Each of us have our own vision and style, so it is extremely important to pick a photographer whose style matches yours… not to find a photographer and expect them to create images that they aren’t experienced enough to do. Or to choose someone based on how much another bride/family loved them, even though you don't love their images.  You’ll be disappointed and they’ll be anxious, and both for no reason.  If you’re super traditional, totally off the beaten path, or somewhere in the middle… find someone who photographs according to your style and taste.

2) Look at collections of their work.  Most of us will post our highlight reel to Facebook and Instagram, but to look at a whole collection helps you to see the whole story of the day and see if its captured in the way you want your wedding (or family!) to be captured.

3)  It’s also super essential to find someone who not only matches your style but also your personality.  Remember, besides your bridesmaids and maybe your mother… the photographer you choose will be with you all day on the one of the most memorable days of your life.  If you feel intimidated or just plain uncomfortable in their presence, odds are, you’re not going to have an incredibly enjoyable day, and your pictures will show it.  So, how do you find out what a photographer is like before you book them?  Meet with him/her… I personally love sitting down and figuring out what you’re expecting from me and it gives you a chance to figure out if I’m ‘the one’ for you.  Booking an engagement session before your wedding also gives a photographer and a couple time to warm up and get accustomed to each other.  Asking around also gives you some insight on what a photographer is like during the moment… find out who they’ve shot for and get some feedback from them.

So, why am I not saying “No-matter-what-book-me-pretty-please!?!”?  Because I’m not right for every couple, and every couple isn’t right for me… be fair to yourself and your photographer and pick someone who fits you… you’ll be so happy that you did, and your pictures will show it!
