St. Augustine Family Beach Sessions | Captured by Colson Photography http://capturedbycolson.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/8/st-augustine-family-beach-sessions-captured-by-colson-photography Being a small business owner also means that sometimes, I can take my "show on the road", which is something I have looked forward to doing the past few summers!  Scheduling family sessions while at the beach with my own family has been such a blessing and I am thankful for my work and for my sweet clients!

This summer I was able to shoot seven sessions at the beach (two of which were my own extended family - #winwin!)  Six families and one senior were in front of my camera at one of their favorite places to be -- the beach!  We warded off rain and lightening on a couple of these shoots and I'm so glad we did!  Beach sessions are one of my favorite types because people are relaxed, they feel tan and beautiful, and are almost always planning to head out to a delicious dinner after the session (coconut shrimp, anyone?!).

Families getting together at the beach is such a long standing tradition for many of these groups!  I'm so happy that this year's trip was documented, taking them back there during the mundane days, the rainy + cold days and in the days leading up to their next trip!

St. Augustine, Florida Senior Session | Logan | Captured by Colson Photography http://capturedbycolson.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/8/st-augustine-florida-senior-session-logan-captured-by-colson-photography Meet Senior Model Team Member // Logan Hornsby!  He is involved in tons of sports at school, with football on the nearest horizon -- basketball in the winter then soccer in the spring.  He feels the best about himself when he's out on the field, excelling at the sport of the season, and looks up to his dad who insures that he does his best!   Logan stays busy with school, but makes time to be involved with his church congregation as well!  Self proclaimed as a preppy guy (and I think his sock choices prove that!), and not exactly a country guy are just a few of the ways that he describes himself.

I was thrilled when Logan was on board with driving down to St. Augustine for his senior session!  We started at the pier, which also had some awesome boulders as a holding wall on the beach.  It was full of more variety than if we'd just gone down to the sand.  Once the sun started to set, we raced downtown to grab a few extra shots at the fort... I love that even though it was crawling with people, we were able to snag some shots with no one in the background!  Working with Logan was a ton of fun... he had some great wardrobe choices and kept me laughing the whole time!  Excited to see what his senior year will bring!

After ten years of dating, these two are tying the knot this fall!  I have such a warm heart for my couples who have been dating for many years, because of my own love story with my husband.  I felt so thrilled to photograph this sweet milestone… just one step closer to their wedding day!

Five Tips for a Delightful Destination Portrait Session | Captured by Colson Photography http://capturedbycolson.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/6/five-tips-for-a-delightful-destination-portrait-session I.  Love.  To.  Travel.  There... I said it.  Although it's harder to do with our two little ladies, it's getting easier as they get older, which is great!  While we may not be in the most 'destination driven' area in Georgia, we certainly aren't far from a lot of places that are.  Last year, photography sessions took me to Jekyll Island, Driftwood Beach, Disney's Magic Kingdom and three of it's resorts, St. Augustine Beach and into the downtown area of that historic city!  And I loved every single second of that!  Clients just come alive when they are in unique places and it makes me almost burst with creativity!  Not to mention that most of these sessions happened when they were on vacation = relaxation = happy!  And a happy client makes for a smiley one!

Here are some things to think about if you are planning a destination portrait session:

1) Where to go //

This may seem like an obvious one, however it can have many facets.  Do you want your session to be at a place you've never been or a place where you're very familiar?  Do you want to have iconic landmarks in the background, or do you just like the more tucked away areas?  Are you choosing the place because of it's vibe or weather or just because you love being there?  These are all important things to think about as well as how they will translate in photos!

2) When to go //

While the beach is the most convenient in the summer, sometimes its also the most likely to rain and to be the hottest and most crowded, what if you went there in the late fall or early spring -- or at sunrise?  What if you chose to go to the touristy spot during the 'off season' or early in the morning so there aren't any people in the background?  While sunset is often the best time for great light, being creative with your timing (whether that be seasonally or time of day) can make all the difference in personalizing your session!

3)  What to wear?

This decision can play into your location a couple of different ways.  I love the idea of setting your outfit to your location -- a long gauzy dress against the sharp beach rocks, a blue dress in the Magic Kingdom that nods to "Alice in Wonderland", flannel and boots on a mountain trail, etc.  Those ideas are classic and are the obvious choice, but what if you took it a step further and went in the opposite direction?  A light and airy dress paired with a flower crown in the mountains or shoot at the beach in the winter with a big blanket, a camp fire or a cup of coffee?  Choosing the right outfit could mean going with or completely against the usual vibe of the place!

4)  Who to involve?

Destination sessions may be a convenient way to take family photos (everyone is already at the beach/cabin/lake/resort so why not?!) or it may be a fantastic way to document your trip as a couple!  Some locations, like the beach, lend themselves to larger groups of people, but others, like a very touristy spot or tight location -- like downtown, would be better for just one or two people.  Pets and children might do great in a rural setting, where as a senior or engaged couple would gain energy from the sights and vibe of a more urban area!  Thinking about who will be in the photos can make a big difference in what destination is right for your session!

5) What is your purpose?

Thinking about your purpose and vibe of your photo session is very important when deciding if a destination session is right for you.  Are you just using the session to get some great posed shots since you'll all be together?  Then maybe a more relaxed place is best for you.  Will your session include the exploration of a place -- hiking, climbing, swimming, boating?  If that's the case then careful planning of time and outfits will serve you well!  I love that most of the time, destination sessions lend themselves to documenting people experiencing something different from their ordinary lives.  That joy translates so well in the camera and can give you such natural looking photos.

So you've decided where to go and when to go there, you've decided your outfit choices and who all will be involved in the session and you've chosen what your vibe and purpose are!  Great!  All that's left to do is get on the schedule and start planning your trip!  I'm excited at the possibilities that destination sessions offer and can't wait to see what you come up with!  Contact me and lets make it happen for you!

At Home Wedding | Ronny + Gayle | Captured by Colson Photography http://capturedbycolson.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/6/at-home-wedding-ronnie-gayle-captured-by-colson-photography I know I'm not alone when I say that there is so much joy in my heart for this wedding and this couple!  This wedding was one that has been prayed over and hoped and wished for for a very long time. These are the parents of my best childhood friend, and they reunited after many years apart. The bride walked down the aisle on the arm of her cousin and stood beside her groom for their new beginning!  With their daughters and sons-in-law and grandchildren standing beside them, they said their vows in front of sweet family and close friends under a beautiful arbor.

Their reception consisted of a brunch catered by the bride and a few friends, while a collection of favorite cakes stood in place of a single wedding cake.  Guests mingled together and enjoyed the morning celebrating this beautiful occasion.  I had tears in my eyes as I watched how the Lord works in His own time and how he knows the whole story while we only see bits. It was an honor for me to document this important and beautiful day in their lives! I love these two so much!

St. Augustine Beach Sessions | The Colsons | Captured by Colson Photography http://capturedbycolson.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/6/st-augustine-beach-sessions-the-colsons-captured-by-colson-photography Last week's beach trip was a blessing.  Full of family times, beach walks, delicious food and post-dinner games (Rumicube, anyone?).  This spring was a wild ride of weddings and photo sessions on top of wrapping up my teaching career, so to say that I needed the little peaceful rhythm of the ocean outside my window is an understatement.  And it did not disappoint.

Each year, my sister-in-law and I team up to make sure that we are able to get a couple of great family photos from our trip!  While it rained almost every evening, we were able to carve out about 30-45 minutes one evening to snag a few!  Because of our shortage of time, we woke up the next morning, got the little girls dolled up and took them down to the sand for a session focused just on them!  We probably should have started that session closer to 7:00, but when you're on "beach time", you just do what you can, when you can ;)

(All of the photos in the above collage were taken by Hannah, my six year old... she loved walking around snapping these and I adore seeing her perspective and what stands out to her!)

(Thanks to Ali Parks for hitting the shutter button on the one above!! And to Katie Plyler for snapping a few of my own sweet family pod below!)

Pebble Hill Plantation Bridal Session | Captured by Colson Photography http://capturedbycolson.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/6/pebble-hill-plantation-bridal-session-captured-by-colson-photography A sweeter bride would be difficult to find.  Caitlin was so stunning at her Pebble Hill Plantation bridal session last month, and I'm SO excited to finally be able to blog them... her wedding to Chance was this past Saturday which was a dream of a day (blog about that to come soon!).  Her hair + makeup were flawless, and her dress with it's perfect little lace scalloping around the top was just right for her!  We wandered around the beautiful Pebble Hill property midst the historic brick buildings and hidden courtyards, finding the perfect spots to showcase this beautiful southern bride!

The Crescent, Valdosta | Lauren + Taylor | Captured by Colson Photography http://capturedbycolson.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/6/the-crescent-valdosta-lauren-taylor-captured-by-colson-photography What a refreshingly simple wedding this was.  With it's heirloom details such as his grandfather's cuff links, and her grandmother's earrings, and it's traditional touches and it's intimate ceremony, this event was one filled with sweet moments.  Lauren's father walked her down the boxwood aisle of the formal garden and into the white, wooden chapel filled with the closest family.  After the ceremony, a larger party of guests gathered in the gardens to congratulate the bride and groom and to celebrate with a brunch reception.  To end this precious friend and family filled morning, the couple released two turtle-doves off the porch of The Crescent before exiting down an aisle of lavender-tossing well-wishers.  Truly a special moment in the lives of these two love birds!

Pebble Hill Plantation Engagement | Becca + Britt | Captured by Colson Photography http://capturedbycolson.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/6/pebble-hill-plantation-engagement-becca-britt-captured-by-colson-photography She said he talked her into going out with him, she'd said she wasn't into the idea of a long-distance relationship... but here they are after years of an across-the-state love, and they've got less than a year before they close that gap for good!  Sweet Becca + Britt spent the afternoon with me at Pebble Hill Plantation, wandering their gorgeous property filled with stately brick buildings, ivy covered walls and pristine grounds.  And these two were nothing short of perfect together -- they laughed, they snuggled, they were so comfortable with one another.  This, of course, made my job so easy!

Columbus, Georgia Wedding | Garrett + Savannah | Captured by Colson Photography http://capturedbycolson.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/6/columbus-georgia-wedding-garrett-savannah-captured-by-colson-photography Last summer I received a phone call from my "baby" cousin telling me that he'd proposed to Savannah, and I couldn't have been more happy for him.  These two are such a perfect fit for one another... Both easy-going and patient, fun to be with and clearly adorable.  We drove in to Columbus to quite a dreary day, it was overcast and threatened rain at any moment.  And that moment came about the time the groom + groomsmen arrived at the Sikes home, which also happened to be their wedding venue.  While it wasn't exactly storming, it certainly was dropping steadily and heavily.  Throughout the whole rainy process, sweet Savannah and Garrett were just so gracious, trying to make the best decisions in the moment.  And even though it wasn't how they'd planned, their wedding ceremony was equal parts sweet and loving.

It was such a fun wedding day and I couldn't have done it without my second photographer / reception photographer, Faith Allen -- she took over during the reception and I was able to enjoy it with my family... it was the perfect solution, and she was wonderful to work with!

Quail Branch Lodge Wedding | Brooke + Mason | Valdosta Photographer | Captured by Colson http://capturedbycolson.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/6/quail-branch-lodge-wedding-brooke-mason-valdosta-photographer-captured-by-colson I know it's totally cliche to say that the best sunsets come after the most torrential downpours, but that was honestly the case for Brooke + Mason's Quail Branch Lodge wedding last month in Lake Park, Georgia.  It was forecasted to rain all day, and it flooded ya'll.  I mean a hard rain with thunder and lightning.  And then, as suddenly as that storm appeared, it just went away.  And these two were so gracious about it all, so patient and calm... they invited their guests to go ahead and enjoy the cocktail hour while they waited it out, then the groomsmen wiped down all of the benches once the storm passed.  On a day where they could be self-serving, this couple served others.  And that speaks volumes about their character and the life they lead.  I seriously have the best clients, ya'll... they are such a blessing to me.

The Crescent | Valdosta, Georgia Bridal Session | Captured by Colson Photography http://capturedbycolson.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/5/the-crescent-valdosta-georgia-bridal-session-captured-by-colson-photography Today's sweet + close knit family wedding had this stunning bride at its center!  I'm so excited to finally be able to blog about this perfect bridal session we had together a few weeks ago!  This new wife is not only beautiful, but so charming with an easy laugh and kind heart.  I loved spending the afternoon with her at one of Valdosta's most iconic buildings -- The Crescent!  We fluttered all around the property, exploring it's nooks and shaded features... and I couldn't be happier with how they turned out!  Be on the lookout for their wedding blog post coming in the next couple of weeks!  Congrats, pretty lady!

Madison, Florida Wedding | Captured by Colson Photography http://capturedbycolson.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/5/madison-florida-wedding-captured-by-colson-photography According to the maid of honor's toast, Heather had had her heart set on Jordan for quite some time, even before they dated!  These two came to life during their first look together... watching Jordan adore Heather was one of the best parts of this wedding day!  A sweet bridal party and a church packed with friends and family made this day so special for the new Mr. and Mrs. Wesson!  Not to mention the huge variety of cakes for guests during the reception on his family's farm -- I love when couples incorporate their favorite things into their best day!  So many favorite things at this event!

Crane Cottage Wedding | Jekyll Island Club Wedding | Captured by Colson Photography http://capturedbycolson.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/5/crane-cottage-wedding-jekyll-island-club-wedding-captured-by-colson-photography When I first got the call from Katie about photographing her Crane Cottage wedding to Matthew, I couldn't have been more excited!  And as it turned out, I was able to be there with them for the pre-wedding festivities as well!  Our weekend began with their engagement session on Driftwood Beach.  If you've never been to this part of the coast then you are missing out on one of the most beautiful natural scenes in the southeast!  The huge trees that laid gnarled and twisted on the shore were the perfect shade and perches for Katie and Matthew!  After a quick change, we joined them at their rehearsal dinner, which was an outdoor cocktail hour and dinner party.  Under oaks and bistro lights.  Near the water.  At sunset.  It was like something out of a Nicolas Sparks movie!  Friends and family mingled together at twilight, gathering in celebration of Katie and Matthew!

Bright and early Saturday morning, we approached the air of calm that surrounded Crane Cottage.  Katie was getting her hair done, her mom and sister quietly fluttered around getting ready as well, beautiful light streaming in through the windows.  As the morning progressed, more bridesmaids arrived in their neutral dresses and perfect hair; groomsmen also found their way to the cottage.  This 10:00 morning wedding was a perfect choice for these two.  A fresh new day with a fresh beginning to their marriage journey!  Guests watched as Katie and Matt sweetly said their vows and took communion, promising to knit themselves together for their whole life.

The reception was held in the courtyard of Crane Cottage, with guests sitting inside the arched corridors... it was so romantic and beautiful.  A brunch was the perfect choice (and was so delicious!), and the couple greeted their guests while enjoying their first few hours of marriage.  After a cheerful send off with bubbles, they hopped on the back of a club car and were swept away.  This wedding was so relaxed and natural feeling... very much a reflection of the hospitality that Katie and Matthew showed to their guests throughout the weekend.  What a joyful, beautiful morning we had together!
